Meniscus Surgery — Procedure & Aftercare

Meniscus injuries are among the most common knee problems. A knee arthroscopy allows the meniscus to be treated in a minimally invasive way. Depending on the type and location of the tear, the options range from partial meniscectomy and meniscus repair to root reconstruction. The aftercare depends on the type of procedure.

Partial meniscectomy

If the damaged part of the meniscus cannot be preserved, it is removed sparingly. After this partial meniscectomy, the rehabilitation is early-functional.

  • Thrombosis prophylaxis: for 2 weeks
  • Suture removal: after 12–14 days
  • Walking aids: forearm crutches for 12–14 days
  • Weight-bearing: pain-adapted full weight-bearing after 24 hours

Meniscus repair or root reconstruction

For tears close to the base — particularly in younger patients — the meniscus is preserved where possible and sutured, or the meniscus root is reconstructed. With these reconstructive procedures the aftercare is more restrictive.

  • Flexion: limited by a brace to 60 or 90 degrees during the first 4–6 weeks
  • Weight-bearing: reduced weight-bearing during the first 4–6 weeks depending on the tear pattern, followed by a gradual increase to full weight-bearing after 6 weeks
