Partial meniscectomy
If the damaged part of the meniscus cannot be preserved, it is removed sparingly. After this partial meniscectomy, the rehabilitation is early-functional.
- Thrombosis prophylaxis: for 2 weeks
- Suture removal: after 12–14 days
- Walking aids: forearm crutches for 12–14 days
- Weight-bearing: pain-adapted full weight-bearing after 24 hours
Meniscus repair or root reconstruction
For tears close to the base — particularly in younger patients — the meniscus is preserved where possible and sutured, or the meniscus root is reconstructed. With these reconstructive procedures the aftercare is more restrictive.
- Flexion: limited by a brace to 60 or 90 degrees during the first 4–6 weeks
- Weight-bearing: reduced weight-bearing during the first 4–6 weeks depending on the tear pattern, followed by a gradual increase to full weight-bearing after 6 weeks
