Knee Replacement — Procedure & Aftercare

In severely advanced knee osteoarthritis, artificial joint replacement is the treatment of choice. Which prosthesis is used depends on the extent and location of the wear.

Surgical procedure

Depending on the findings, a total knee replacement or a partial replacement (a unicondylar replacement) is used. In the case of advanced, isolated retropatellar osteoarthritis, a retropatellar replacement or a patellofemoral prosthesis is possible.

Procedure & aftercare

  • Duration of surgery: as a rule 1–2 hours
  • Hospital stay: between 3 and 10 days, depending on physical constitution
  • Inpatient rehabilitation: if desired, 6 weeks after surgery for a duration of 3 weeks
  • Weight-bearing: pain-adapted full weight-bearing as a rule from day 1 after surgery
  • Walking aids: forearm crutches for 4–6 weeks after surgery, primarily for fall prevention
  • Thrombosis prophylaxis: in line with the EMA guidelines for almost 6 weeks after surgery
