Surgical procedure
Depending on the findings, a total knee replacement or a partial replacement (a unicondylar replacement) is used. In the case of advanced, isolated retropatellar osteoarthritis, a retropatellar replacement or a patellofemoral prosthesis is possible.
Procedure & aftercare
- Duration of surgery: as a rule 1–2 hours
- Hospital stay: between 3 and 10 days, depending on physical constitution
- Inpatient rehabilitation: if desired, 6 weeks after surgery for a duration of 3 weeks
- Weight-bearing: pain-adapted full weight-bearing as a rule from day 1 after surgery
- Walking aids: forearm crutches for 4–6 weeks after surgery, primarily for fall prevention
- Thrombosis prophylaxis: in line with the EMA guidelines for almost 6 weeks after surgery
