Cruciate Ligament Surgery — Procedure & Aftercare

Not every cruciate ligament tear needs surgery. Depending on age, tear pattern and the individual demand profile, the decision is made between surgical treatment — a cruciate ligament reconstruction (replacement) or a ligament refixation — and conservative therapy.

Cruciate ligament reconstruction

For a cruciate ligament reconstruction, the choice of graft is made individually, depending on accompanying injuries and constitutional factors — for example the semitendinosus tendon or quadriceps tendon, and an allograft where required.

Ligament refixation

In a ligament refixation, the existing cruciate ligament is reattached at its origin or insertion.

Procedure & aftercare

  • Duration of surgery: approximately one hour
  • Aftercare: depends on the accompanying injuries — with an additional meniscus repair, weight-bearing is delayed; otherwise pain-adapted full weight-bearing applies
